Matt Garza has plenty of reason to pat himself on the back after his Monday night performance. He threw is first ever no hitter and also provided the Tampa Bay Ray franchise with their first ever no-hitter as well. The team also had a good night, defeating the Detroit Tigers 5-0 and staying in the hunt for a first place finish in the AL East.
Monday night’s game was another outstanding one for Matt Garza who has managed 11 wins and only 5 losses this season. He was able to strikeout six Detroit Tigers and only gave up one base run on a walk. This walk would prove to be detrimental to Garza’s effort to throw a perfect game. If Garza had managed to avoid the walk, this would have been the 3rd time a perfect game was pitched this year.
Nevertheless, the night was not ruined. Garza was able to throw a no hitter, a personal and franchise first. This was only the fifth one of the entire season. Two of those no-hitters were accomplished by opponents of the Detroit Tigers.
Ramon Santiago, Detroit’s pitcher was also having an excellent night for most of the game. That changed in the 6th inning when he gave up a grand slam to Matt Joyce. Joyce is Tampa Bay Ray’s designated hitter and he came through.
Tampa has had an excellent season thus far. They have a very impressive record of 60 wins and 38 losses. They only trail the New York Yankees three games for first place in the AL East. They are ahead of the Boston Red Sox 5.5 games for the Wild Card.
Bookmakers have listed Tampa Bay odds of winning the World Series at +700. The New York Yankees continue to be the favorite for bookmakers. There odds of winning have been listed at +275.
